Once, I ate ants…

This year we are celebrating 100 years of Cubbing worldwide. In South Africa we are celebrating through Group, District, Regional and National events. But, if we really want to know why Cubbing Rocks, who better to ask than the Cubs themselves….

We spoke to Kevin Bartholomew (10) from 9th Benoni Cub Pack in Gauteng.

KevinSSA: Why is Cubbing so much fun?
Because we can be outside, we make new experiences and it is adventurous.

SSA: What was your best experience with Cubs?
Camping, because then I don’t need to shower.

SSA: What is the weirdest thing you ate outdoors?
Once, I ate ants.

SSA: What was the toughest challenge at Cubs?
The toughest challenge is to lead the younger Cubs as a Sixer and to be a good role model.

SSA: What was the most amazing place you visited with Cubs?
We went to Groenkloof and the Red Bus Tour was also an amazing experience.

SSA: Can you name a few things you have learnt by being a Cub?
I have learnt how to tie knots, a few things about first aid and how to fish.

SSA: What things have you done with Cubs to help people in your community?
I have done some recycling and I helped collect water for farmers during the drought.

SSA: What did you teach your mum that you learned at Cubs?
I taught her how to camp.

SSA: What makes a good Akela?
A good Akela is friendly, approachable and has good ideas.

SSA: Why is your Akela special?
He is special because he is friendly and looks out for me.

Cubbing Rocks because … I make new experiences.
