The Limpopo University Rover Crew recently planned a community clean up initiative to contribute towards making our environment clean and healthy for everyone living in it.
Inspired by the way Limpopo Regional Commissioner and KDT196 director Louise Batty likes giving a hand to people and the surrounding villages, the Rovers were encouraged to look at the world differently, to imagine the world without pollution and to think of how they can actually do something to clean their environment. They identified their local sports grounds.
“We volunteered to clean the sports ground because it was very dirty and the locals were not able to use it fully and enjoy it. We wanted to create and provide a clean space”, explain Rover Crew members Tamea and Katlego. “We picked up rubbish, used bottles and plastics. Seeing the litter collected was a great feeling because we were doing a great turn and it was empowering to see our actions making a difference.”
The Rovers also removed some of the alien trees and vegetation.” The alien trees also consumed a lot of space. Now that it’s clear, we can use it for things like gardening etc. We left the indigenous trees to grow”, continue Tamea and Katlego.
“As a Rovers we believe that a clean and healthy environment is part and parcel of the wealth and quality of life that we all desire for ourselves now and for our children in the future. People need the air they breathe, and the water they drink to be free of pollution. We should also be able to enjoy the beauty of our countrysides and villages, of unspoiled rivers and mountain areas. We want a world that is not threatened by climate change. As Rovers in action, we can make the world better than we found it. “
