1st Cowies Hill Cubs and Air Scouts teamed up with 1st Queensburgh Girl Guide Company and children from Jamaica-Chesterville to build a food garden for the Inkanyezi Creche in KwaZulu Natal. The crèche caters for 60 children aged between 3 and 6 years old. It relies on donations and acts of kindness to feed the children breakfast and lunch. For many of the children that frequent the crèche the meals they receive there are the only food they eat.
“Our 18 Cubs, Scouts and guides were joined by the children from the surrounding area. At one point we counted about 50 children all helping and working hard on the Food Garden,” explains Scouter Karin Carr. “When building the community garden the children learnt how to build and implement the water-wise techniques. This will make it possible for the garden to produce crops for the whole community.”
The Cubs, Scouts and Guides have committed themselves to an 8 week maintenance plan and will continue to make sure that the garden is doing well right until the first crops are ready to be harvested.
