Today we celebrate the UN World Day of Social Justice. The pursuit of social justice for all is the underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous communities and countries. We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability. In order for social justice to be addressed we recognise the need to develop strong leadership and active citizenry, to build capabilities, and address gender equality, food security and environmental sustainability.
The 2020 theme is ““Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice”. SCOUTS South Africa operates in all nine province. 90% of our membership live in rural villages or disadvantages communities and townships and 48% are girls. Our programmes encourage the pursuit of social justice by empowering children and youth to be self-fulfilled as individuals and equipped and skilled to play a constructive role in society. SSA’s youth and adult training programmes focus on educating and equipping members with practical leadership, communication and vocational skills that are relevant and applicable in their daily lives and specific circumstances. SSA’s Diversity and SDG programmes then challenge our members not to accept the status quo but to work toward creating a better and socially just world. SSA provides programmes that are not dependent on resources to complete and succeed, thereby building skills, self-esteem and confidence to embrace future careers and educational opportunities.
In short, SCOUTS South Africa’s members promote a culture of peace and work actively to better themselves and their communities in a bid to promote the principles of social justice and to be empowered and trained to make a constructive contribution to their communities, country and environment.
