Millicent Resaobaka Motang is a vibrant and skilled Troop Scouter at the Zeerust Scout Troop within the D.P Moloto Special School in the North West Scout Region. For 4 years she has been uplifting and empowering children in the Troop she established. The Troop has 30 Scouts that she serves together with Assistant Troop Scouter Modise A.K.A Disco.
“In 2019, right in the middle of Zeerust, Lehurutshe, in the Northwest Province, I came across a purple file. I had just joined the D.P. Moloto Team as a teacher. Little did I know that a file on my table would one day bring personal growth for me and my students, through a journey within the worldwide Movement known as Scouting”, explains Millicent with a smile.
“When I read the file, I went and researched more about this Movement and I loved the fact that it dealt with life skills that a special school learner could gain knowledge from, using the “Learning by Doing” methodology. I reached out to the Regional team and under the mentorship of Tebogo Moletsane, whose assistance was integral in establishing the Troop, we engaged with parents and the school committee, and the Troop was started. Since then, I have learnt to follow the “Do-Your-Best” – principle with confidence and have managed to work with the School Governing Body (SGB) in partaking in this wonderful initiative till today.
My personal Scout journey transcended in 2019/20, when my Troop hosted a Regional Camp where all four Districts where present. Experiencing Scouting together fostered connections with fellow Scouts – both young and old, uniformed and non-uniformed, from all corners of the Region. Finally, I had found my voice as I had social anxiety.
This experience also ignited a passion for traveling in me! Till today, I have attended numerous Scouting hikes, courses, camps and events throughout this country! I have completed my Stage 1 ‘Introduction to Adult Leader Training’ and Stage 2 ‘Warrant training’, and I look forward to starting my Level 3 Adult Leader Training.
As I reflect on my Scouting journey, I aspire to see many other Scout Groups in the Zeerust community. Just as our former Patron and my role model Mr Z S Dipale left a legacy for us at our school, I hope we shall continue to leave this world a little better than we found it.”
Today we also wish Millicent a very happy birthday!
