130 volunteers come together in Cape Town for child development

National SCOUTS South Africa Volunteer Pow Wow Conference

From Wednesday 7 August to Sunday the 11th of August 2024, the bi -annual National Pack Scouters Pow Wow Conference will be taking place at the Rocklands Centre in Simons Town. Over 130 Adult Leaders from across South Africa will converge on the Cape and spend the weekend sharing ideas and best practices, learning new techniques and skills, and networking.

Pow Wow aims to upskill our volunteers who give their time and expertise for free to empower and develop the abilities girls and boys aged 7 to 10 years old. The implementation of our Cub Programme requires our volunteers to undergo training, regular upskilling, safe from harm checks, and more. Weekly, they develop practical programmes that enable children to advance and acquire pre-set educational skills development goals.

The Cub programme is one of four branches of the Scout Movement in South Africa. SCOUTS South Africa is one of the largest and oldest volunteer-driven educational organisations in the country. For over 115 years we have been preparing children and youth (5 – 30-year-olds) to be catalysts for social change by enabling them to be independent people who are self-fulfilled and confident individuals who play a constructive role in society.

Our age-appropriate experiential learning programmes focus on leadership training, life skills and personal development The community service project embedded in the programmes encourage children and volunteers to undertake and participate in initiatives that contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the National Development Plan, such as addressing poverty, gender equality, the mitigation of climate change, and more. Planning and implementing projects enable members to address specific needs in their direct communities and equips them with the skills to make a real difference. As one of the first large organisations in South Africa to break down racial barriers in 1977, SSA is committed to transformation, and this is reflected in the level 1 BBBEE status that the organisation holds. SSA currently has approx. 34 000 members nationwide.
